small lag randomly when creating sounds

Hi,
I noticed a problem with some sort of delay when I load sounds.
It doesn't seem to matter what sound it is (I used a small machinegun sound for a test), but sometimes sound loading only takes 1 ms or so, whilst other times it takes upwards of 100.
Why might this be happening?
