implement tablet style views

It would be nice is tablet style views were supported.
Example: menu selection on the left and details on the right

The ability to create menus and panes is definitely something I want to add. Having said that, I want to make all those pieces flexible enough that the same building blocks can be used in a greater variety of site designs than just the standard two-panel tablet layout.
