<li>The University of Victoria Libraries decided to change platforms for its digital collections in about 2018</li>
<li>We migrated away from ContentDM to an open-source platform called Hyku, which is maintained by the Samvera community</li>
<li>At the same time, we decided to use FAST for 6 of our metadata fields (mainly Subject, Creator, Contributor)</li>
<li>A controlled vocabulary is an organized arrangement of words and phrases used to index content and/or to retrieve content through browsing or searching</li>
<li>OCLC is the organization that created and maintains FAST</li>
<li>FAST heavily relies on URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers), which meant that we had to convert textual values from ContentDM into URIs for Vault</li>
<li>I won't go into detail about the metadata migration, but my colleagues and I recently wrote an article on the migration and implementation of FAST so check that out if you're interested</li>

<li>Just to give some examples of what I mean by textual values and URIs:</li>
<li>Textual values are how many non-experts read/experience metadata, where people and concepts are represented directly with strings of text</li>
<li>We had textual values in our old system, ContentDM, that were mostly created on an ad-hoc basis</li>
<li>Although they're human-readable, there can be quite a bit of , which can make them somewhat ambiguous or inconsistent</li>
<li>By contrast, URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) are uniquely identifiable and also machine-readable</li>
<li>For human readability, we have controlled labels attached to their identifiers, which can be fetched via APIs or various code libraries like the ActiveTriples gem</li>

<li>There isn't an API for FAST changes, so I can't, say, send a request for all FAST Changes in the last month in JSON</li>
<li>Lastly, if you have more than one controlled vocabulary field, it's hard to search multiple fields for the same value at the same time</li>
<li>So even when our metadata staff have identified which textual value or URI needs to be changed, it's not easy for them to identify exactly which items they need to update in our repository</li>
