The Exchange is a free public data and API platform that provides access to quality housing and economic data. The platform makes analyzing housing data—including number crunching that until recently had to be done by specialists—accessible to organizations that lack deep technical expertise. The objective of The Exchange is to drives innovation in U.S. housing and mortgage markets through data sharing.
While you can browse the site, registration is required to use the APIs and Apps. You can sign up for The Exchange here.
An Application Programming Interface (API) is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. APIs are typically created by organizations to allow individuals – or applications such as Google Maps – to access their data.
No, personal identification data is not available through the APIs.
To try out the APIs, follow these steps:
- Sign up for The Exchange.
- Review the documentation for each product: Housing Pulse, Manufactured Housing, Loan Data Tool Kit.
- The documentation provides an industry standard Swagger API definition. Note there are “curl” commands embedded within each API endpoint. Use these as a guide to programmatically access the APIs.
- Register or log in and navigate to Documentation and click on one of the primary API endpoints.
- Copy and paste the curl command as a guide on how to begin programmatically with the API. This contains your User Token. If you remain logged into the site, your user token will be automatically refreshed. Please note that the User Token is set to expire after 60 minutes of inactivity.
