海葬看來雖然非常自由，但申請海葬流程非常嚴謹，根據台灣海葬法規規範，首先需要預約船期，其次需要在指定海域，海葬海域須符合以下基本規定：

<div>海葬實際法規細則如下：</div>
<div>1.《殯葬管理條例》第19條規定：直轄市、縣（市）主管機關得會同相關機關劃定一定海域實施骨灰拋灑，而目前僅有臺北市、新北市及高雄市訂有較明確的相關公告規範，其他縣市則需洽詢該縣市殯葬管理處。</div>

<div>2.《殯葬管理條例施行細則》第17條規定：「依本條例第19條第1項規定劃定之一定海域，除下列地點不得劃入實施區域外，以不妨礙國防安全、船舶航行及漁業發展等公共利益為原則」。</div>
<div>一、各港口防波堤最外端向外延伸六千公尺半徑扇區以內之海域。</div>
<div>二、已公告或經常公告之國軍射擊及操演區等海域。</div>

海葬費用通常落在約五萬元內，若是自行籌備海葬，家屬就需負擔喪儀費用以及包船出海，海葬價格通常會落在約兩萬五到五萬間，視喪儀規模、船隻大小、參與人數而定，但若是參與聯合海祭，海葬費用則政府補助，幾乎免費，但缺點是舉辦時間受限，缺少彈性，規格比較如下表：

而就最有爭議的火化後骨灰或汙染海洋生態來說，科學研究顯示，海葬用的骨灰顆粒會再研磨至更細的粉末，大約2 mm以下的粉末，這樣更有利環境消化分解，海葬已將環境污染可能降至最低風險。

而民俗說法將先人靈骨撒在海中讓海中生物吸入或食用，或是死無葬身之地會產生的各種報應之說，這點則就只能端看個人如何解讀，畢竟選擇環保自然葬，只是沒有形式上的墳墓或骨灰罈，但不表示對先人懷念就此變得不重要，相反地，我們應該轉換思維，追思先人不需再局限於忌日或清明祭祖日，沒有了墓地或塔位，我們反而隨時隨地都可以追思，因為親人早已化為千縷微風，無處不在。
