build_index.sh: the graph IRI is built with sed, so some filenames corrupt provenance and others break the whole build
build_index.sh turns each file's triples into quads by appending a graph IRI
derived from the file's path. That is the feature the whole project rests on —
provenance is free because the graph is the path. The append is done by
interpolating the path into a sed replacement string (line 170), and the path
is never escaped for either sed or the N-Quads grammar.

Four characters in a filename produce four different wrong outcomes. The first
is the one that worries me, because nothing reports it.
1. A backslash silently produces the wrong graph IRI
In a sed replacement, \b is an escape, not two characters. The backslash is
consumed:
input file: /data/notes/a\bc.ttl
graph IRI: <https://example.org/data/notes/abc.ttl>
That IRI is syntactically valid, so nothing fails and nothing is logged. The
triples are simply attributed to a different path than the one they came from —
and if notes/abc.ttl also exists, both files' triples land in one named
graph with no way to tell them apart afterwards. For a store whose selling point
is per-file provenance, a silent misattribution is worse than a crash.
2. & expands to the matched text
& in a sed replacement means "the whole match", which here is .
(space, period):
input file: /data/notes/a&b.ttl
graph IRI: <https://example.org/data/notes/a .b.ttl>
Wrong path and — because it now contains a space — not a legal IRI.
3. A space (or <, >, ", {, }, ^) makes the quad invalid
input file: /data/my notes.ttl
graph IRI: <https://example.org/data/my notes.ttl>
N-Quads does not allow those characters unescaped inside IRIREF. This is the
consequence I most want to flag, because of what it collides with. The header
comment promises per-file failure isolation:
The build itself still succeeds — broken files surface as queryable
annotations rather than blocking the whole store update.
That promise holds for rapper and converter failures, which are caught. It does
not hold here: the malformed quad reaches qlever-index, and with set -euo pipefail a rejection there fails the entire build. One file named with a space
takes down the index for every other file in every chamber.
4. | breaks the sed expression itself
| is the delimiter, so a filename containing one ends the s command early:
sed: -e expression #1, char 37: unknown option to `s'
Same blast radius as (3).
The same gap in the error path
escape_literal (line 79) handles backslash, double-quote, newline and tab, but
not carriage return:

A raw CR is not legal unescaped in an N-Triples literal. So a converter or
rapper whose stderr contains CR (anything writing a progress line, or a tool
run under a pty) yields a malformed error quad — meaning the mechanism whose
only job is to stop one bad file from breaking the build is itself capable of
breaking the build.
What is measured and what is not
Measured in this environment: all four sed behaviours above, reproduced by
running the exact expression from line 170 against a representative N-Triples
line, and the CR passing through escape_literal unchanged (od -c).
Not measured: qlever-index's reaction to a malformed quad. There is no
qlever binary here, so I have not confirmed that it exits non-zero rather than
skipping the line. Cases (3) and (4) rest on that; case (1) does not, and case
(1) is the one that produces no error at all.
Not a security report. The README's trust note already states that a mounted
data directory is trusted to the point of executing its converters, so anyone who
can create a file named a\bc.ttl can already run code. There is no privilege
boundary crossed here — it is a correctness and availability bug, which is why it
is filed in the open.
Suggested direction
Two changes, both small:
- Stop building the quad with
sed. Pass the graph IRI as data rather than
as part of a program — e.g. awk -v g="${graph_iri}", which has no
replacement-string metacharacters. That removes (1), (2) and (4) outright.
- Percent-encode the relative path before appending it to
BASE_URI, so the
result is a legal IRI whatever the filename. This is also the more correct
reading of "graph IRI derived from the path", and it fixes (3).
Then extend escape_literal to cover \r and other C0 control characters, so
the diagnostic path can't produce an invalid quad.
I am happy to open a PR for this if it is wanted; I currently can't (the token
this deployment holds has no PR scope), so tell me the shape you prefer and I
will hand over a diff.
