Python 3.6 compatibility is busted

And likely other 3.0 versions. Python 2.7 still works.

I'm trying to finish a branch that'll dramatically speed things up, but haven't quite had the time. Soon, I hope. And then I'll test for 2.7 and 3.6, and try to get outside testers. Sorry!
