Incoming MMS not shown by OpenBubbles #223

Description

@mtalexan

I'm using an iPhone with the actual SIM card in it and forwarding all messages enabled. I have two android OpenBubbles devices registered as different Mac Mini devices. All incoming MMS messages are recieved by the iPhone but never show in OpenBubbles.

This failure to get MMS on OpenBubbles comes in a couple different ways:

  1. MMS Images don't show up on OpenBubbles no matter what
  2. Long text MMS does show up in 1-on-1 chats
  3. Long text MMS shows up in group chats, but only for users that have met specific conditions in that chat first, and then they're shown in a separate duplicated group in the interface instead.

In all cases the iPhone is recieving all the messages and organizing them properly, and all other non-MMS messages are reaching OpenBubbles just fine.

I noticed this first in an "SMS" group chat of 5, with mixed Android and iPhone where some of the iPhone users don't have an iOS with RCS support. I wasn't seeing any of the messages at all in that group chat on any OpenBubbles devices.

I did a test and sent a small image to myself from a secondary phone number that doesn't have iMessage or RCS, and found it wasn't shown in OpenBubbles but was present on the iPhone. I verified a long (>140 chars) text message however did reach the OpenBubbles.

In the group chat I then sent a longer message sccessfully, and the first person to reply happened to be the Android user who replied with a short message (possibly SMS instead of MMS?). OpenBubbles recieved that message but created a completely new group in the interface for it, with the same group members in it. Other users also replied, some with short messages and some with pictures, none of which appeared in OpenBubbles. The Android user then sent a long text (MMS) message, which appeared in OpenBubbles in the duplicate group in the interface. Other users replied to that too, none of which showed up in OpenBubbles.
The other users replying are all on iPhones without RCS support, so they may be sending with MMS or SMS, I can't tell.

It looks like OpenBubbles isn't handling incoming MMS correctly. It isn't handling images/files at all. And within groups it looks like maybe an incoming SMS/MMS has to be recieved immediately after an outgoing message before it will trigger creation of a (duplicate) group in the interface and then it will accept and handle messages only from that one user in the group chat.

I exported the developer logs after this event so I can share them directly with a developer if they're working on it, just let me know.
