In OCA/account-invoicing#2279, @lmignon is experimenting with Odoo native upgrade utils for improving the migration times through a command that performs updates in parallel.

It's worth to explore the possibility of adding calls to this library similar way, or to develop (hard) an alternative.

OpenUpgrade could depend on it and for similar methods called on OpenUpgrade call the corresponding one into the odoo upgrade lib at the same time of issuing a deprecation warning message.

No rush, let's give everyone time to experiment and form an opinion about the odoo library , and it could be an interesting topic for a future code sprint....

Yeah, that's why I have opened this issue as an starting point :)

Without digging too much, not sure if adding directly the dependency in the library, or to make direct calls in the migration scripts, as auto-calling one thing or another transparently for the user seems not easy.

We will probably have a project during this year where the downtime for upgrade is critical, so I will come back to this.

At a first sight, I'd prefer the explicit dependency and call
-> It does'nt hurt.
-> better for the developper to select the better way to make a migration. For exemple, in the @lmignon migration script, I don't see any reason to not use the upgrade.util way.
-> avoid to duplicate upgrade tools.
-> simplify the migration scripts.

Do you see any reason to not depend on it ?

I think a hard dependency is out because openupgradelib wants to support ancient versions of Odoo/python. We could however add some openupgradelib[v19+] feature that adds stuff depending on upgrade-utils and make that mandatory for future versions

The odoo library is meant to support 7.0 up to latest version, so maybe we can start using it from 14.0 or 16.0...

Any thoughts ?
