If it would help, I can write a simple guide for local branching and merging for the "getting started" page, unless someone else is already working on that.

I say go for it. You mean a sort of temporary development branch work flow, where changes are made on a local branch first then pulled into master, then pushed to GitHub? We definitely want to cover that.

I started some writing guidelines over on the project's wiki, right now it's just capitalization (Git, GitHub) and first person plural.
