We run AI agents on cron schedules (23 tasks/day) and the scariest thing is not the cost — it is the silent runaway. An agent enters an infinite loop at 3 AM, token spend compounds, and you only notice when the bill arrives.

Our approach was a circuit breaker pattern:

• Token budget per task (hard limit)
• Execution time cap (kill after N minutes)
• Output validation (detect if agent is producing garbage loops)

The 14 leash classes concept is smart. We found that different tasks need different leash tightness:

• Content generation: loose leash (creative exploration)
• Data processing: medium leash (structured outputs)
• API integrations: tight leash (strict schemas, fail fast)
