Sidepanel for opening files

Would it be possible to add one more item to the sidepanel, one that has the "Recent files" list? I'm often switching files and I find it cumbersome to always have to go to File > Open Recent > search for file. If I could have the file list already present there at the side panel it'd be a great improvement to my workflow.

If the side panel file list could be customized, even better! For example, choosing which files you want to appear there (but having the option of new files being appended automatically) or picking their order (or maybe options for sorting).

• f1
• f2 (*f3 was excluded from this list)
• f4
• f9 (*f9 was added here because it makes sense to have it in the 4th position or pinned)
