I've noticed that some of the items get tagged twice.

I get that they are different lines of the same file, but it's also that the second item says "Secret in log" when it's not a log file.

The same is the case for the googlecloud.json file. It's referring to the same line in the same file.

Root Causes Identified

Issue 1: Multiple Rules Scanning the Same Files

The primary cause of duplicates is that multiple rules are checking the same files and creating separate findings:

1. Regular file scanning (scanner.py:222-232): All rules run on every scannable file
2. Environment file scanning (scanner.py:448-454): All rules run again on .env and docker-compose.yml files
3. Log file scanning (scanner.py:516): The dedicated R080LogContainsSecret rule runs on log files

This means that files like googlecloud.json can be scanned by:

• General rules during regular file scan
• All rules again if it matches env file patterns
• The log rule if it's in a log directory

Each scan produces findings with the same line number but different contexts, resulting in what appears to be duplicates.

Issue 2: Incorrect "Secret in log" Labels

The second issue - non-log files being labeled as "Secret in log" - occurs because:

1. The R080LogContainsSecret rule is included in self._rules (scanner.py:161)
2. During env file scanning, all rules (including R080LogContainsSecret) are applied (scanner.py:449)
3. The R080LogContainsSecret rule has titles like:
   • "JWT Token in Log" (rules.py:1433)
   • "Private Key in Log" (rules.py:1457)
   • "URL Credentials in Log" (rules.py:1481)
   • "Possible {key_pattern} in Log" (rules.py:1511)

So when googlecloud.json is scanned as an "environment file" (even though it's not really one), the log rule creates findings with "in Log" titles.

Fingerprint Generation (masking.py:378-402):

def create_fingerprint(rule_id, file_path, line, key=None):
    components = [rule_id, file_path, str(line or 0)]
    if key:

    return hashlib.sha256(":".join(components)).hexdigest()[:16]

The fingerprint includes:

• Rule ID (different rules = different fingerprints)
• File path (same)
• Line number (same)
• Optional key (may differ)

So the same secret on the same line produces different findings when detected by different rules.

Recommended Solutions

Option 1: Exclude Log Rule from General Scanning (Recommended)

The R080LogContainsSecret rule should only run on actual log files, not during general or env file scanning.

Changes needed:

1. Don't include R080LogContainsSecret in the general rules list
2. Keep it as a dedicated rule (self._log_rule) used only by _scan_logs()
3. Update get_all_rules() to exclude it from the main rule set

Files to modify:

• custom_components/secretsentry/scanner.py:161 - Don't add log rule to self._rules
• custom_components/secretsentry/rules.py:1809-1833 - Remove R080LogContainsSecret() from the returned list

Option 2: Add Rule Type Filtering

Add a rule category system where rules can specify which file types they apply to:

• LOG_ONLY rules only run on log files
• CONFIG_ONLY rules only run on config files
• ALL rules run on all files

This would be more extensible but requires more refactoring.

Option 3: Deduplicate Findings Post-Scan

Add deduplication logic that merges findings with the same file + line but different rule IDs. This is a workaround rather than a fix.

Additional Observations

1. googlecloud.json is being treated as an env file: This file shouldn't be in the env files list unless explicitly configured by the user
2. File categorization could be improved: The scanner could better distinguish between:
   • Configuration files
   • Environment files (.env, docker-compose.yml)
   • Log files
   • Credential files (.json, .pem)

Changes Made

Modified custom_components/secretsentry/rules.py:1809-1833:

• Removed R080LogContainsSecret() from the list returned by get_all_rules()
• Added documentation explaining why it's excluded
• Added inline comment noting it's handled separately in scanner._scan_logs()

What This Fixes

1. Duplicate detections eliminated - The same secret on the same line will no longer create multiple findings with different rule IDs
2. Correct labeling - Non-log files like googlecloud.json will no longer be incorrectly labeled as "Secret in log"
3. Proper rule scope - The log rule now ONLY runs on actual log files via the dedicated log scanner

How It Works

Before:

• R080LogContainsSecret was in the general rules list
• It ran on ALL files during regular scanning (line 223)
• It ran on ALL environment files (line 449)
• It ran on log files (line 516)
• Result: Same secrets detected multiple times by different scanning passes

After:

• R080LogContainsSecret is excluded from general rules
• It ONLY runs via scanner._log_rule during _scan_logs() (line 516)
• Log-specific detections happen only for actual log files
• Result: Each secret detected once with correct context

Testing Recommendation

To verify the fix works:

1. Run a scan on your configuration containing the files from the issue
2. Confirm googlecloud.json secrets are only detected once
3. Verify the finding doesn't say "Secret in log" for non-log files
