from knb-lter-cap.46 (but broadly)

update_attributes does not maintain quoted text making it appear that there is a difference. This may not really be a problem but can lead to conclusion, and may cause errors if in fact quotes are required.
update_attributes does not maintain numeric type - that is, integers are converted to double
