Using Basilisk as a submodule

I am trying to build a simulation for a satellite with Basilisk and will need to add a few custom flight software modules. Is there a way in the build system to add external modules for basilisk to use or do all modules have to be inside of the basilisk repository? I am trying to avoid the latter because I prefer using git submodules over creating forks of projects.
